“The legal community — particularly the First Amendment field — lost a giant recently in Wisconsin-based civil rights attorney Percy L. Julian Jr., who died Feb. 24 in Madison at age 67,” laments David L. Hudson, Jr. of the First Amendment Center here. I considered Percy a friend, and the comments offered by Jeff Scott Olson and H. Louis Sirkin in the article are spot on: Percy was a talented lawyer, and an extraordinary gentlemen. In a sad coincidence, I e-mailed Percy last week, picking his brain about recovering attorney’s fees under 42 U.S.C. Sec. 1988. (Percy has always taken time to educate — and console — me.)
Now I know why my friend did not respond.
